Breeding Philosphy

The Bergamasco Sheepdog is a rare breed, and every decision matters. Our program is small by choice, and each litter is planned carefully, not routinely.

I believe preservation breeding means being honest about the breed as it is, while doing the work to move it in the right direction. That includes maintaining correct breed type, paying close attention to structure and movement, and selecting for stable, livable temperaments.

I care a lot about balance. I’m not interested in exaggeration or trends, whether that’s in structure, coat, or presentation. I want dogs that can move well, live comfortably, and stay sound over time. Structure matters to me because it affects how a dog lives its life, not just how it looks standing still.

Temperament is equally important. Bergamascos are thoughtful, observant dogs that form deep bonds with their people. I value dogs that are steady, confident, and able to settle into family life without being sharp or reactive. Puppies are raised in my home and exposed to normal, everyday experiences so they grow up comfortable in the world around them.

Health is part of every breeding decision. I support established health testing for the breed and believe in making choices with the long-term picture in mind, not just the outcome of one litter.

I am selective about where my puppies go. Placement is based on the individual dog and the home, not a first-come list. I’m always happy to talk through whether a Bergamasco is the right fit, and I remain available to my puppy owners for the life of the dog.

This isn’t about producing numbers. It’s about doing right by the breed, the dogs I live with, and the people who trust me with one of my puppies.
